Communication Systems and Lab

This course covers communication systems from the basic digital communication to most advanced wireless topics, including the MIMO systems. The main focus will be on building the capability for designing communication systems and verifying it with Matlab (or C) simulations based on a strong theoretical understanding. The course will review digital communication, parts of which are covered in the digital communication course, and parts of which are not covered such as maximum likelihood sequence detection and continuous phase modulation. We will conduct Matlab simulation on every Monday in the computer lab together, and on Wed we will have a lecture for the theoretical understanding. The detailed subjects to be covered in the course as follows:

1. Introduction: Wireless communication, SoC chip, Role of system engineers
2. Digital Communication
* Optimum receiver in AWGN
* Maximum likelihood sequence detection
* Communication over bandlimited channels
* Simulation by Matlab using the optimum receiver for those topics
3. Wireless Communication
* Review of fading channel models
* Generation of fading channel models by simulation
* Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems
* Diversity MIMO
* Spatial Multiplexing MIMO
* CDMA systems
* OFDM systems
